Time Waster - Forums

How many sites do you open throughout the day?
For me it varies, depends on what I'm working on.
But not so much as 'how many' tabs are open, as it is 'what' I have opened, lol.
For me my biggest time waster is forums. I like to use forums to keep up with what is going on, get some help for something I don't know how to do, and to help out where I do have a clue. But I seem to start reading and reading and reading and …. I think you get the picture.
What keeps me on track? What is my secret weapon to beat time wasting? I'm going to tell you, but get ready, it is earth shaking, it is amazing, it is the latest and greatest in time management gadgetry. Are you ready, are you sure…
A kitchen timer! Yes you 'heard' me correctly, a plain ol' kitchen timer.
I allot a certain amount of time in my daily schedule that is just for browsing forums. I can browse guilt free for that set amount of time. And I use my timer to keep myself on track.
Depending on my day, I usually have any where from a half hour to an hour for my forum forays. So I just set my timer to that time and when it goes off, I'm done and back to work. I do allow myself to finish a particular topic that I am on, but I absolutely can not go to a new one.
This one little trick has made a big difference in my productivity, and I don't feel 'deprived' of my forum experiences

Hi, Stacy, great solution for the forum time drain. I really learn a lot from the forums I frequent, and know that when i visit, there has to be a limit to both reading and posting. I always try to create one question to ask and one contribution to make. It usually turns out though that I spend too much time on one or the other before i have to move on to other parts of my day or evening. The timer idea is a good one, I have a few timers around the house for just that reason. Thanks for reminding me.
Best,
Mary
